Stitch Cooperative & TNNA

June 9th, 2010

I've been such a naughty blogger lately… I'm sorry for the lack of updates. A *LOT* has been happening… let's see what I can remember.

I've moved back to MA from TX, and since then the pace of my life has seemed to increase again. It's funny how that can happen. Life in TX was very chill and relaxed. I spent the days working from the little house, and the evenings were spent with James and maybe & a friend or two relaxing in our yard on a spread-out blanket, or walking/bike-riding around the neighborhood.

Since I've returned to MA, there has been a lot more social interaction—family, coworkers, friends… and more family. My time seems more precious, as there doesn't seem to be as much of it.

I've set up an office in my old bedroom at my dad's house—from where I do work for Classic Elite, as well as any other knit/crochet related business. It's not entirely organized just yet, but it works. I really enjoy having a space to myself to be able to spread out and do what needs to get done. So, what's been getting done? Well, the biggest step for me right now is that I joined Stitch Cooperative.

Stich Co-op is owned and operated by the independent designers who are members of it. Shannon Okey is the manager, and brains behind the whole thing. Stitch Co-op is a way for yarn stores to obtain patterns from various indie designers, without having to work with multiple designers themselves. Instead, the designers (myself included) offer their patterns through Stitch Co-op—thus yarn stores only need to work with one person/company. Yarn stores have the option to sell the patterns on their website as PDF downloads, or as printed copies in their store. Printed versions of the patterns can be purchased wholesale by yarn stores by creating a wholesale account, then by visiting this page to view my patterns.

If you'd like my patterns to be carried in your LYS, please tell them about Stitch Cooperative.

This weekend is TNNA, and Stitch Co-op will be displaying a few of my garments as well as marketing my patterns to yarn stores. If you'll be at the show, stop into booth #158 to take a look around!

I'll also be going to TNNA this weekend! Cecily Glowik MacDonald and Melissa LaBarre and I will be leaving MA tomorrow night, stopping at WEBS for a little pre-TNNA prepratory yarn overload, then headed to Ohio to arrive on Friday morning, ready for the festivities.

There's so much going on at the show that I don't want to miss! Friday morning TNNA is offering something new—TIPS. Depending on how much sleep I get during the drive I may try attending this. There are a few talks that I'd really be interested in hearing—Classic Elite is talking about earth friendly yarns, including nettles, which is used in one of their new Verde yarns; Nature Buttons will be talking about how to choose buttons for finished garments; Shaefer Yarn Co. will be talking about patterns that make great classes; Ysolda Teague will be introducing her new collection; Zealana/Yarn Sisters will focus on natural & exotic fibers, organic and green yarns, plus the conservation element.

Friday evening there is a fashion show, and Ravelry is hosting an ice cream social. Ice cream generally doesn't treat me very well, but there are going to be lots of people there who I'd love to meet, so I'm not going to miss it. Saturday I'll be taking a class with Robyn Chachula on how to *Crochet like a Pro* and Cecily & Melissa will be showing off their book at the Interweave booth at 10 am. Sunday there's a big dinner planned with Marly Bird and tons of other wonderful, fiberly people. I'll be filling the time in-between the planned things to mingle and scope out what's coming out this Fall. I'm so excited and trying not to be overwhelmed.

Knitting Green - Soap Nut Vessels

June 7th, 2010

When I received the design submission request for Ann Budd's book, Knitting Green, I was overjoyed that this book was going to be published, and couldn't wait to see what it would become. Cecily Glowik MacDonald (designer of the Solstice Skirt, p. 18) and I chatted a bit about what we would submit. She mentioned a soap nut pattern I published on my website a few years back.

Soap nuts are a little-known gem from mother nature, and I love spreading the word about them. A little lacy bag provides an ideal vessel to contain three or four soap nuts while water aggitates them in the laundry—creating a gentle detergent.

Read more about soap nuts here.

I didn't hesitate to swatch up some lacy stitch patterns to submit to Knitting Green. I choose lacy stitch patterns to provide gaps in the knitting to allow the water to easily flow to and from the soap nuts. The bags are small, so 4 or 5 bags can be made from one skein of the Lanaknits Allhemp3 yarn. One bag can last a long time, but you may enjoy trying out the three different stitch patterns that are offered in the book. I have 2 vessels, one for my colored clothes, and one for the whites. I've also made many of these to give away as gifts.

I've not yet seen soap nuts in a store, however they can be ordered online. I get mine through Zamuta.com.
