Three Needle Bind-Off Technique June 1, 2016 06:40

This is one of my favorite techniques. It can be used whenever two pieces of knitting need to be joined at the bind-off edge. I use it a lot on the shoulders of sweaters, to join the back and front together.

Here's how to do it:

Step 1: Hold two needles parallel, with the same number of stitches on each needle, and the tips of the needles pointing in the same direction. It's most common to hold the right-sides facing each other so the ridge will be on the wrong-side of the work.

Step 2: Insert a third needle into the first stitch of the front needle and then into the front stitch of the back needle as if to knit.

Step 3: Knit the first stitch of each needle together and slide them off the left needles.

Step 4: Knit the next stitch of each needle together and slide them off the left needles. There are now 2 stitches on the right needle.

Step 5: Pass the first stitch on the right needle over the second stitch to bind-off one stitch.

Repeat Steps 4 and 5 until all stitches are removed from the left needles and only 1 stitch remains on the right needle. Then fasten off.
